First Day of First Grade

Everyone,

Today was the first day of school for Miss Butterfly.

Butterfly first day 1st grade

We were all very (very) happy to hear that her school had power, after the weekend brush of Hurricane Irene, and would actually be open to receive students this morning.

This year Butterfly will ride the big “blue” bus that is yellow.  She hopped right on this morning.

And after a few hours, she hopped right off.

One excited 1st grader after her first day!

Her teacher this year, Mrs. Dez, is going to be a lot of fun.

Butterfly and Mrs. Dez

She is thrilled this year to have a DESK all her OWN.  She is also excited to put her school supplies in her DESK.

It’s just too thrilling.

This morning, before the bus, I asked her a few questions:

“Are you excited?”

“Yep.”

“What are you excited about?”

“Playing with my friends on the playground.  And lunch.”

“Who are you looking forward to playing with?”

“You know!  My friends!”

“Are you nervous about anything?”

“Nope.”

“Alright.  Have fun!”

“You know I will!”

Tonight we went out to ice cream to celebrate the first day of school.  She had cookie dough ice cream with a cherry on top.  She said it’s been a cherry on top kind of day, wonderful and special.

We measured her (52 and 3/4 inches tall) and ended with a father’s blessing for the school year (protection and friends).

I think it’s going to be a great year!

My Little Snowman’s Teeth

Everyone,

Today at school for spirit week is dress like a snowman day. Butterfly and I picked out things that were white for her to wear. But since she didn’t have white pants, she wore her great sparkly leggings because “when the sun shines on the snow it’s sparkly.” Okay.

Butterfly Snowman

Juice had a hat, I supplied a fun scarf, and off to school she went! Isn’t she an adorable snowman?

Butterfly Frosty

This snowman also lost her FIRST tooth today!! She lost it sometime at lunch at school. She’s not sure where it is. But she didn’t eat her apple because there “was a crunchy hard spot” in it. Ah ha. Still, no tooth to show but a gap! And the gap makes her look so big!

Butterfly missing tooth

She wrote a note to the tooth fairy explaining what happened to her tooth and put it under her pillow for the tooth fairy to visit.

Butterfly toothfairy letter

The letter says, “Dear tooth fat Dear tooth fairy I have lost a tooth at lunch in my school please find it! it It is at my school! please still bring me a present. It is at my school. And this is Butterfly work. Love Butterfly!” Then she drew a tooth.

I can’t believe how fast she is growing up!

First Day of Kindergarten

Everyone,

In Butterfly’s own words:

“First, we had to wait a long time for everyone to be there.  It was really boring.  But then we went up to my classroom, you know the one we went to?  And we have Choice time!  I played with play dough.  I don’t get to play with play dough very often, do I?  I should play with that during every Choice time.

And lunch was cool.  I didn’t get to finish everything because everyone was being too loud and annoying me.  Recess was fun.  I played a lot on the slide.

Oh!  I got to go see the nurse again too.  She’s really nice, but she made me drink some yucky water and swish it around in my mouth and make the ‘rhrhr’ sound in my throat.  I went because I was coughing so much.

My backpack was too big for my cubby.  You shouldn’t put so much stuff in it.  And I didn’t know you gave me tissues!  I could have used them today but I don’t know how to open the box.

It was a fun day.  I want to go back tomorrow.”

She came running out of school all smiles and happy to see me.  I’m not quiet sure what happened to her back pack though…everything was gone from it except the tissues and the baby wipes.  Don’t you think that if they didn’t need these things, they wouldn’t ask for them?  I can’t figure out why they came back.

Also, if they send Butterfly to the nurse, I’d like to know about it!  I thought maybe there would be a note in her backpack but there wasn’t.  Do I ask the teacher for more information?

Speaking of the nurse, Butterfly started complaining that her ear hurt about an hour after school.  By the end of dinner, she was in tears it hurt so bad.  Uh-oh.  It sounds like she has another infection.  Or maybe she was just exhausted from the day?  We’ll find out tomorrow morning.  If it still hurts her, I’m taking her to the doctor’s.

And the best way to end such a big day?  A big dish of strawberry ice cream…with a specially requested cherry.

Big Proud Smiles

Everyone,

Today was a big day for us.  And it was ALL about Butterfly.  Today was her kindergarten orientation.  Our baby is going to be in school!  All day!  Starting August 30th!  I’m a bit wigged out.  Is she really that old?  Didn’t she just look like this yesterday?

Nov Butterfly 6 month

Well that sweet cute baby is now big enough for school.  She was whisked away by some very enthusiastic teachers this morning and Juice and I filled out forms.  The boys went to a friend’s house.  Then we met with the principal, saw the school a little, and became overwhelmed.

There’s so much to think about with her going to school. I guess her school is very academic. They want them reading in 6 months. They do math, phonics, science, social studies every day. They also have special classes like gym, music, technology, etc one day a week. My 5 year old is going to have technology classes. I think my parents have a picture of me when I was about that age sitting in front of our brand new computer when they were super new. Now my daughter will have classes on how to use the things. Amazing.

Because we live in a very poor area, our school is allowed extra grant money for things. They have just redone the building and will have 3 new playground areas by the time she starts school. There are 56 kindergartners and if they get another one, they will have 4 classes of 14 kids each. If not, they get 3 classes of 18 (or so). I’m impressed with those numbers.

They also have a summer school program where they preview the first 9 weeks of school all through the month of July. It’s free. They give them breakfast and lunch. For free. It’s half day from 9-1pm. They bus the kids in and out. Again, for free. They strongly suggest that all the incoming kindergartners do it.

I’m torn. I want her to go, but I don’t want to give up my very last summer of having her all to myself. I want to be able to go downtown or swimming or just stay in our pjs all day long if we want to. I want to not have to worry about getting somewhere by 9am every day. I want to be in charge of her lunches.

But on the other hand, it would be great for her to try school out when there aren’t so many kids around. It would be great for her to ride the bus home every day while it’s fairly empty. It would be great for her to have some kind of school background before going into kindergarten since I’m 80% sure she will be the only child there that did NOT do preschool outside of the home.

What would you guys do?

And congrats to my good friend Rosemarie at Twice as Nice for winning the Ergo Carrier! Congrats Rosemarie and use it well with your new little one! Email me your info and I’ll send it soon.

And my LAST giveaway is still going on! Remember to make some comments because this soap is amazing!

What Happened Today

Everyone,

We all had one DRY night. Last night, I told Butterfly that she could get a book at the used book store today if she was dry last night. This morning, she was so put out and grumpy that she declared she did not want to get a new book. EVER. Never ever ever!

Okay then. No book today.

How much do you want to bet that she will remember it in a few days at the most inconvenient time and demand that we go get the promised book that second. And then there will be another fit because I won’t be able to.

Good times in my house let me tell you!

On a totally unrelated note, I do feel rather accomplished today. I cleaned my living room and vacuumed with my new vacuum! (Yay for early Christmas presents) I did two loads of dishes. I went to a doctor’s appointment with just my book for company. (Thanks Juice! That’s an awkward appointment to take kids to.) I even went out and saw a movie with my friend Lolli! I haven’t seen a movie in about 6 months, and then we only go to the kid movies. Although this movie may as well have been a kid’s movie. It was okay, but not great.

And now, I’m exhausted. Time for an early bed!

Last Baby-ness

Everyone,

We finally caved and cut Butterfly’s hair. I wasn’t going to cut it originally. I have no idea why. Mostly because she had cute little curls at the end. But the past few months I have noticed that she is looking a little ragged. Shaggy. Unkempt.

I have been saying we should cut her hair for about a month now. We have just never really gotten around to it. But I feel the impending birth of 2 baby brothers. And who knows when or if I’m going to go on bed rest. I just want everything in place. And having everything in place included getting her hair cut.

She sat as still as a stone through the whole thing. Of course, it helps that we went to the kiddie cut place where they let you watch a movie. They had some Barbie movie which riveted her. She even kept trying to watch around the lady if she got in her line of sight. It took the stylist about 2 minutes to do. She got a sucker for her ‘trouble’ and a cute little certificate. I also bought her a new bow to match her new Easter dress.

We then went to the shoe store to buy her new Sunday shoes. The shoe store had floor to ceiling mirrors every few feet. She would one to run, stop, look, smile, and then run to the next. And stop, look, and smile. I think she really likes her new hair cut. I must admit, it’s very cute. But all that baby look is finally gone. She really is growing up!

A First!

Everyone,

Last night was a first for Butterfly. She actually went to the bathroom in the potty! Yay! Off and on she will ask to sit on the potty. (Probably because I have been bribing her with jelly beans to just sit on the potty.) She liked to be read to and I figured that she would eventually go if she was on there long enough. Well, last night she asked to sit on it, and went! Yay Butterfly!

That’s my Favorite Dentist

Everyone,

Butterfly had her very first dentist appointment today. We all went at the same time. They cleaned my teeth (2 cavities and a filling appointment on my birthday…sigh) while she watched. They did Juice’s fast (beautiful, see you in January) and then asked Butterfly back. I got to hold her while the dentist tried to look in her mouth. She succeeded by asking Butterfly to brush her teeth with a brand new Tigger toothbrush. Butterfly happily did because there was hot pink toothpaste. You mean toothpaste comes in different colors?! Wow! She also loved rinsing and spitting. She managed to spit it all out on that paper bib, but at least she didn’t get too wet. She still is waiting on her second molars but other than that, the dentist says she has great teeth. No cavities, keep brushing.

She was very good and got her picture and a sticker and a yo yo. As we were leaving she pipes up and says “That was my favorite dentist!” We are now the dentist’s favorite patients. :) I wonder if that means I can have a yo yo when I go back.

Butterfly’s Big Girl Bed!

Everyone,

Happy 4th of July! And Happy Canada Day to my Canadian readers (which I have several)! Our 4th was very low key. We went to our church’s breakfast this morning. It was nice. I ate too much but we sat next to someone new in the ward. So we got to chatting and their daughter (who happened to be visiting with her 2 kids, 3 and 1) went to Ricks College the year I graduated from there. Which means she’s two years younger than me. And she already has 2 kids?! Lucky…

Sorry, tangent. Anyway, we lit those snake fireworks and called our celebration good. The big thing that we did today was buy Butterfly a big girl bed. We were in and out in 15 minutes. It was nice to be the only customers, early, and know exactly what we want. Butterfly had a great time rolling from bed to bed, and I picked out one that I thought was comfy. (Who knows, I may have to sleep on it in the future!) They also took off some money on the box springs because they didn’t match and threw in the frame for free because this was her very first bed. I only spent 20 more dollars than my budget and I feel great!

We took it home on the top of our car (only about a mile down the road but I was terrified that it was going to fly off) and commenced the great nursery explosion. We left the crib up because we will hopefully need to use it soon. We moved so many things out of the room that are now sitting in the middle of my room. I can barely make it to my bed, but her room is so neat and tidy! We apparently have too much junk. Anyway, we also are using the dresser as a bed rail for a month or so and then I’ll move it to the opposite wall. I think it looks cute. Thanks Mom for the super cute comforter! But can I just say that this bed is murder to make. Awful! And I thought making the crib was hard!

Butterfly slept in it with no problems for her nap. She was so excited about it she kept pretending to sleep while we were trying to set it up. I can’t believe my baby is old enough to sleep in a regular bed.

Time is going by so fast!

Butterfly’s First Movie

Everyone,

Last night we made an impulsive trip to the theater with Butterfly’s friend Vinny and his parents. They had been begging us to go to the movies with them, and I had been pretty hesitant. I mean, I have a 2 year old. Would a 2 hour movie mix with the 2 year old’s attention span? Oh, not to mention the time they take for previews (which I will skip next time, thank you very much…too scary!). But I figured we had to start somewhere and you can’t really go wrong with a D*isney/Pi*xar movie. Why not?

So off we went. It was a little fraught with peril following Vinny’s car (no no! don’t loose it! Vinny!) and a poopy diaper change in the women’s bathroom (no! no! I want DADDY! DADDY!) because there was no changing station in the men’s bathroom. But we made it to our theater and sat down with our popcorn. Butterfly loved the popcorn. Good thing too because the projector must have gotten stuck or something. It paused on that screen that said turn off your cell phones and stayed there for 10 minutes. Finally Juice went out to see what was going on and shortly after he came back, the movie started. Yay!

Oh, before the movie started Vinny was holding up popcorn to Butterfly to show her and she said, “No thank you Vinny. I have my own popcorn.” This kid is going to grow up very polite. Not a bad thing because it’s so so cute now.

Butterfly was very good in the movie. She only had to be taken out once to have another diaper change (never feed your kid cranberry sauce the day before!) and she spent most of the movie with her head on Juice’s arm. She did keep trying to say “Hickory Dickory Dock” because of the rat in the movie. At the end of the movie she clapped her hands and got the whole theater to do it too. But she sat in that chair and watched. I was amazed.

The short before the film was cute, and we were all laughing. (Butterfly included but I don’t think she knew what we were laughing about.) The short was about aliens and at the end, when the alien ship sped away, she said “Yay hooray! We did it!” And not quietly either. The whole theater laughed.

At the end of the show, Juice asked her how she liked the movie. She looked at him, shrugged her shoulders, and said, “It wasn’t Little Einsteins.” Guess what her favorite show is right now?

And yes, the movie wasn’t Little Einsteins. I am so happy it wasn’t!
