Question of the Week: Potty Training

This week’s question of the week at the Multiples and More blog is about potty training. And wow am I so not the expert on this topic.

What are your tips and tricks for potty training?

* What age did you begin with your child(ren)?

Butterfly I started when she was a little over 3 years old.  See, I was going to start her when she turned 3 but I had twins 3 weeks later.  I didn’t want her to regress when the boys were born.  So I waited.
* How long did it take?

For Butterfly, she was basically trained in about a week.  She had one accident and then was done.  With pee, anyway.  Pooping on the potty took a little bit longer and little bit of bribery in the form of matchbox cars from the movie, Cars.  Night training came about a year later.  We are STILL working on that one though and she is 5!
* Did you use a “system”, or just wing it?

We mostly just took her to the bathroom when she said or every half an hour, whatever came first.
* Did you use specific rewards for incentive? How did that work for you?

Like I mentioned, we used matchbox cars as her incentive.  We tired a lot of other things; candy, cookies, stickers, etc.  Nothing really worked except the cars though.  And now we have every single car from that movie, some doubled.  Works out great because the boys LOVE these cars.  Butterfly still does too!
* If you could change anything about the experience, what would you do differently?

I’m not sure.  Probably nothing.

* Did you use Pull-Ups?

Yes, when we were going out places, we would use pull-ups.  But at home, it was underwear all the way.  And of course, night time pull ups.

* Do you think it’s easier to potty train multiples at the same time, or separately?

I have NO idea about this one!  Guess we’ll see!

    She got cars as her reward? Impressive! My boys would love her! My oldest was totally against the idea – until he went in the potty and got his first car – then he forced himself to pee 5 times in the next hour so he could get more. :)

    I had read in books to potty train twins separately but I think potty training all three of mine at the same time was awesome. It was like good peer pressure – even now when little kids come over that aren’t potty trained they all want to sit on the potty when they see three other little kids doing it. Plus I made a big deal about treats and snacks and celebrations during our potty “boot camp” and you can believe I wasn’t going through that twice. One of them took slower to the potty than the other, but I knew that just seeing his brothers going all the time would eventually win him over.

    My kids were both 3. I would have no idea how to potty train twins. Good Luck!
